Backsliding as a Christian
AChristian that continually falls back into a life of sin is called a “backslider”. The dictionary says that a backslider is one that “reverts back into bad habits, undesirable activities or sinful behavior”. In the Bible a backslider is someone that stops following the Lord and turns to their own way and begins to serve the ways of the world and other gods.
We can see the backsliding of a whole nation in Exodus 32:1,7,8:
And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the Mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down, for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves; They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
These scriptures show how a person or a nation can turn from the Lord in an instant. The eternal sacrifice of Jesus and the goodness of God can be received by a Christian then in an instant that same Christian can turn their backs on the Lord and start to worship other gods. These gods can include money, sex, power, etc. The only real cure for backsliding is for the Christian to go through deliverance and then afterwards serve the Lord with a new found vigor and enthusiasm.
Backsliding comes from the disobedience of the Lord through the medium of sin. If a Christian thinks a sin is too small to repent of they could well be on their way to backsliding. When we turn our focus from the things of the Lord to the things of the world and of the devil we are well on our way to turning from the Lord. Each day is a new beginning as a Christian and we must look at each day as a day of reflecting on our faith to see if we are truly serving the Lord in our hearts, mind, and our entire being. The expression “I am only human” has gotten a lot of well-meaning Christians in a lot of trouble and has caused them to stray away from their course with the Lord. Backsliding on the Lord begins in the heart of a believer.
Proverbs 14:14: The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways.
Is it possible to be full of sin and still carry on and do the things of God like nothing is happening? Yes this is very possible. If a believer does begin take care of his spiritual well-being, Christianity will become ritualism.
Isaiah 58:1-2: Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins, Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of Justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
If you have backslidden you can come back strong in the Lord by taking these “steps to deliverance“. Do it now in Jesus name.
